A Maine lawmaker who fought towards vaccine and masks mandates resigns after his spouse dies of COVID-19

A Republican lawmaker from Maine who fought in opposition t COVID-19 mandates has resigned from his put up.

Rep. Chris Johansen stepped down from his place months after his wife died of the coronavirus. 

In his resignation letter, Johansen defended his opposition to COVID-19 guidelines.

Rep. Chris Johansen stepped down from the Maine apartment of Representatives on November 19. 

He submitted his resignation letter to Democratic condo Speaker Ryan Fecteau that same day, calling his determination a "difficult" one. 

Johansen referred to he became stepping down to spend more time with family and have a tendency to the animals on the couple's farm after his spouse, Cindy, died from COVID-19 in August. 

In his resignation letter, the lawmaker persevered to rail towards masks and vaccine mandates.

"The closing two years had been about fighting for the principle that government would not get to tell you how to live your life," Johansen wrote. "In that time I actually have misplaced my pal, my close ally, my spouse."
